Frobenius automorphism of a finite field

Definition

Let FF be a finite field of characteristic pp. The Frobenius automorphism of FF is the map φ ⁣:F→F\varphi \colon F \to F, φ(x)=xp\varphi(x) = x^p.

Remarks

The map φ\varphi is the Frobenius endomorphism of FF. It is injective, as is every field homomorphism, so it is bijective, because FF is finite. The map φ\varphi fixes every element of the prime subfield Fp\mathbb{F}_p, by Fermat's little theorem. If ∣F∣=pn|F| = p^n, then φn\varphi^n is the identity, and the automorphisms of FF are exactly id,φ,…,φn−1\mathrm{id}, \varphi, \dots, \varphi^{n-1}. So Gal(Fpn/Fp)\mathrm{Gal}(\mathbb{F}_{p^n}/\mathbb{F}_p) is cyclic of order nn, generated by φ\varphi.

Explanations

L1 human

Raising to the power pp respects addition in characteristic pp, by the freshman's dream. In a finite field, this map permutes the elements, and every symmetry of the field is a power of it.

What this node needs for W1
  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a node is. They do not measure its truth.

What this needs

To read this node, read these 12 nodes in this order. The foundations come first, and the list ends with this node.

Each node uses the nodes above it. The colour of the bar on a box shows the evidence level, and the box also gives it as text. The list below has the same nodes.
