statement theorem

Freshman's dream

Statement

Let pp be a prime number and let RR be a commutative ring of characteristic pp. Then (x+y)p=xp+yp(x + y)^p = x^p + y^p for all x,y∈Rx, y \in R.

Remarks

The proof uses the binomial theorem. For 0<k<p0 < k < p, the prime pp divides the binomial coefficient (pk)\binom{p}{k}, so these terms vanish in RR. By induction, (x+y)pn=xpn+ypn(x + y)^{p^n} = x^{p^n} + y^{p^n} for every n≥0n \ge 0. The identity gives the Frobenius endomorphism. In R\mathbb{R} the identity is false: (1+1)2=4(1 + 1)^2 = 4 and 12+12=21^2 + 1^2 = 2.

Explanations

L1 human

The name refers to a common error: (x+y)2=x2+y2(x + y)^2 = x^2 + y^2 is false for real numbers. In characteristic 22, the middle term 2xy2 x y is 00, and the identity becomes true. The same thing happens for every prime pp in characteristic pp.

The writing levels say how complete the text of a node is. They do not measure its truth.

What this needs

To read this node, read these 5 nodes in this order. The foundations come first, and the list ends with this node.

Each node uses the nodes above it. The colour of the bar on a box shows the evidence level, and the box also gives it as text. The list below has the same nodes.
