Characteristic of a ring

Definition

Let RR be a ring. For a positive integer nn, write n⋅1=1+1+⋯+1n \cdot 1 = 1 + 1 + \dots + 1, with nn terms. If there is a positive integer nn with n⋅1=0n \cdot 1 = 0 in RR, then the characteristic of RR is the least such nn. If there is no such nn, then the characteristic of RR is 00.

Remarks

The rings Z\mathbb{Z}, Q\mathbb{Q}, R\mathbb{R} and C\mathbb{C} have characteristic 00. For n≥1n \ge 1, the ring Z/nZ\mathbb{Z}/n\mathbb{Z} has characteristic nn. The characteristic of RR is the nonnegative generator of the kernel of the unique ring homomorphism Z→R\mathbb{Z} \to R. The characteristic of an integral domain is zero or prime.

Explanations

L1 human

Start with 11 and keep adding 11. In the integers you never come back to 00, so the characteristic is 00. Modulo 55, you get 00 after five steps, so the characteristic is 55.

What this node needs for W2
  • edge instance_of in: one example (0 of 1)
  • edge not_instance_of in: one non-example that fails one clause (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a node is. They do not measure its truth.

What this needs

To read this node, read these 3 nodes in this order. The foundations come first, and the list ends with this node.

Each node uses the nodes above it. The colour of the bar on a box shows the evidence level, and the box also gives it as text. The list below has the same nodes.
  • no evidence level

  2. Ring definition
  3. Characteristic of a ring definition

What depends on this

9 nodes use this node, directly or through other nodes.
