Prime subfield

Definition

Let KK be a field. The prime subfield of KK is the intersection of all the subfields of KK. It is the smallest subfield of KK.

Remarks

If the characteristic of KK is a prime pp, then the prime subfield is isomorphic to Fp=Z/pZ\mathbb{F}_p = \mathbb{Z}/p\mathbb{Z}. If the characteristic of KK is 00, then the prime subfield is isomorphic to Q\mathbb{Q}. The prime subfield of R\mathbb{R} is Q\mathbb{Q}.

Explanations

L1 human

Every subfield contains 00 and 11, and so it contains all the sums 1+1+⋯+11 + 1 + \dots + 1 and their quotients. These elements form the prime subfield. In the real numbers, they are exactly the rational numbers.

What this node needs for W1
  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a node is. They do not measure its truth.

What this needs

To read this node, read these 9 nodes in this order. The foundations come first, and the list ends with this node.

Each node uses the nodes above it. The colour of the bar on a box shows the evidence level, and the box also gives it as text. The list below has the same nodes.

  4. Commutative ring definition
  5. Subring definition

  9. Prime subfield definition

What depends on this

4 nodes use this node, directly or through other nodes.
