One-sided limit

Definition

Let D⊆RD \subseteq \mathbb{R}, let f ⁣:D→Rf \colon D \to \mathbb{R}, and let aa be a limit point of D∩(a,∞)D \cap (a, \infty). A real number LL is the right limit of ff at aa if the following holds. For each ε>0\varepsilon > 0 there is δ>0\delta > 0 with ∣f(x)−L∣<ε|f(x) - L| < \varepsilon for all x∈Dx \in D with a<x<a+δa < x < a + \delta. The notation is lim⁡x→a+f(x)=L\lim_{x \to a^+} f(x) = L. The left limit lim⁡x→a−f(x)\lim_{x \to a^-} f(x) is defined in the same way, with a−δ<x<aa - \delta < x < a.

Remarks

The right limit is the limit of the restriction of ff to D∩(a,∞)D \cap (a, \infty). If aa is a limit point of points on both sides, then lim⁡x→af(x)=L\lim_{x \to a} f(x) = L if and only if both one-sided limits exist and equal LL. For the sign function at 00, the right limit is 11 and the left limit is −1-1.

Explanations

L1 human

A one-sided limit only looks at points on one side of aa. A function with a jump at aa has two different one-sided limits there.

What this node needs for W1
  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a node is. They do not measure its truth.

What this needs

To read this node, read these 3 nodes in this order. The foundations come first, and the list ends with this node.

Each node uses the nodes above it. The colour of the bar on a box shows the evidence level, and the box also gives it as text. The list below has the same nodes.
  • no evidence level
  1. Limit point of a set definition
  2. Limit of a function definition
  3. One-sided limit definition

What depends on this

41 nodes use this node, directly or through other nodes.
