statement proposition

log x is at most x - 1

Statement

For every real x>0x > 0, ln⁡x≤x−1,\ln x \le x - 1, with equality if and only if x=1x = 1.

Remarks

Put ln⁡x\ln x into the inequality 1+y≤ey1 + y \le e^y. Then 1+ln⁡x≤eln⁡x=x1 + \ln x \le e^{\ln x} = x. The line y=x−1y = x - 1 is the tangent to the graph of ln⁡\ln at x=1x = 1. Replacing xx by 1/x1/x gives ln⁡x≥1−1/x\ln x \ge 1 - 1/x. Mathlib states the main claim as Real.log_le_sub_one_of_pos.

Explanations

L1 human

The graph of ln⁡\ln lies below its tangent line at x=1x = 1. This follows from the concavity of the logarithm.

What this node needs for W1
  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a node is. They do not measure its truth.
