Initial value problem

Definition

Let Ω\Omega be an open subset of R×Rm\mathbb{R} \times \mathbb{R}^m, let f:Ω→Rmf : \Omega \to \mathbb{R}^m be a function, and let (t0,y0)∈Ω(t_0, y_0) \in \Omega. The initial value problem for ff at (t0,y0)(t_0, y_0) is the system y′(t)=f(t,y(t)),y(t0)=y0.y'(t) = f(t, y(t)), \qquad y(t_0) = y_0. A solution of the problem is a solution y:I→Rmy : I \to \mathbb{R}^m of the equation y′=f(t,y)y' = f(t, y) on an open interval II with t0∈It_0 \in I, such that y(t0)=y0y(t_0) = y_0. The condition y(t0)=y0y(t_0) = y_0 is the initial condition.

Remarks

For an equation of order nn in explicit form, the initial conditions are the values y(t0),y′(t0),…,y(n−1)(t0)y(t_0), y'(t_0), \dots, y^{(n-1)}(t_0). The reduction to a first-order system changes this problem into the problem above. The problem y′=yy' = y, y(0)=1y(0) = 1 has the unique solution y(t)=ety(t) = e^t. The Picard–Lindelöf theorem gives a unique local solution when ff is continuous and Lipschitz in yy. The Peano existence theorem gives a solution when ff is only continuous.

Explanations

L1 human

A differential equation alone usually has many solutions. The initial condition says where the solution starts, and this picks one solution. Suppose that you know the speed of a car at each moment and its position at the start. Then you know its position at each moment.

What this node needs for W2
  • edge instance_of in: one example (0 of 1)
  • edge not_instance_of in: one non-example that fails one clause (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a node is. They do not measure its truth.

What this needs

To read this node, read these 6 nodes in this order. The foundations come first, and the list ends with this node.

Each node uses the nodes above it. The colour of the bar on a box shows the evidence level, and the box also gives it as text. The list below has the same nodes.
