First integral

Definition

Let UU be an open subset of Rn\mathbb{R}^n and let f:U→Rnf : U \to \mathbb{R}^n be a function. Let H:U→RH : U \to \mathbb{R} be a continuously differentiable function. It is a first integral of the autonomous system x′=f(x)x' = f(x) if ∇H(x)⋅f(x)=0for each x∈U,\nabla H(x) \cdot f(x) = 0 \quad \text{for each } x \in U, and if HH is not constant on any non-empty open subset of UU.

Remarks

The condition means that ddtH(γ(t))=0\frac{d}{dt} H(\gamma(t)) = 0 for each solution γ\gamma. So HH is constant along each solution. Each trajectory lies in a level set {x:H(x)=c}\{x : H(x) = c\}. In the plane, the level curves of HH give the phase portrait. For the harmonic oscillator x′=yx' = y, y′=−xy' = -x, the function H(x,y)=x2+y2H(x, y) = x^2 + y^2 is a first integral. The Hamiltonian of a time-independent Hamiltonian system is a first integral.

Explanations

L1 human

A first integral is a quantity that does not change while the system moves, such as the energy of a system without friction. Knowing it tells us that each motion stays on one level set of this quantity.

What this node needs for W1
  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a node is. They do not measure its truth.

What this needs

To read this node, read these 14 nodes in this order. The foundations come first, and the list ends with this node.

Each node uses the nodes above it. The colour of the bar on a box shows the evidence level, and the box also gives it as text. The list below has the same nodes.
