statement theorem
Stability of linear systems via eigenvalues
Statement
Let be a real matrix and consider the linear system with constant coefficients on , with the equilibrium point . (1) The point is asymptotically stable if and only if each eigenvalue of has . (2) If some eigenvalue of has , then is unstable. (3) The point is Lyapunov stable if and only if two conditions hold. Each eigenvalue has . Each eigenvalue with has equal algebraic and geometric multiplicities.
Remarks
The proof uses the matrix exponential. The entries of are sums of terms . Here is an eigenvalue and is less than the size of its largest Jordan block. In case (1), there are constants with for . So the origin is globally and exponentially stable. For , both eigenvalues are but the solution is unbounded. So is unstable, in accordance with (3). The Routh–Hurwitz criterion tests the condition of (1) from the coefficients of the characteristic polynomial, without computing the roots.
Explanations
L1 human
For a linear system, the eigenvalues decide everything. Eigenvalues with negative real part give decaying solutions, and an eigenvalue with positive real part gives a growing solution.
What this node needs for W1
- an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
The writing levels say how complete the text of a node is. They do not measure its truth.
