System of linear differential equations

Definition

Let n≥1n \ge 1, let II be an open interval, let A:I→Rn×nA : I \to \mathbb{R}^{n \times n} be a continuous matrix-valued function and let b:I→Rnb : I \to \mathbb{R}^n be continuous. The system of linear differential equations with coefficient matrix AA and right side bb is the equation x′(t)=A(t) x(t)+b(t)x'(t) = A(t)\, x(t) + b(t) for an unknown differentiable function x:I→Rnx : I \to \mathbb{R}^n. The system is homogeneous if b=0b = 0 on II.

Remarks

In coordinates, it is the system xi′=∑j=1naij(t) xj+bi(t)x_i' = \sum_{j=1}^{n} a_{ij}(t)\, x_j + b_i(t) for i=1,…,ni = 1, \dots, n. For each t0∈It_0 \in I and x0∈Rnx_0 \in \mathbb{R}^n, there is exactly one solution on all of II with x(t0)=x0x(t_0) = x_0. The solutions of the homogeneous system form a vector space of dimension nn. A basis gives a fundamental matrix. A linear equation of order n becomes such a system by reduction to a first-order system.

Explanations

L1 human

Several unknown functions change at the same time, and each rate is a linear combination of all the unknowns. In matrix form, the system looks like one linear first-order equation, with a matrix in place of a number.

What this node needs for W1
  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a node is. They do not measure its truth.

What this needs

To read this node, read these 7 nodes in this order. The foundations come first, and the list ends with this node.

Each node uses the nodes above it. The colour of the bar on a box shows the evidence level, and the box also gives it as text. The list below has the same nodes.
