Algebraic element

Definition

Let L/KL/K be a field extension and let a∈La \in L. The element aa is algebraic over KK if there is a nonzero polynomial f∈K[x]f \in K[x] with f(a)=0f(a) = 0.

Remarks

The number 2\sqrt{2} is algebraic over Q\mathbb{Q}, because it is a root of x2−2x^2 - 2. Every element a∈Ka \in K is algebraic over KK, as a root of x−ax - a. The element aa is algebraic over KK if and only if [K(a):K][K(a) : K] is finite. An element that is not algebraic is transcendental.

Explanations

L1 human

An algebraic element solves a polynomial equation with coefficients in the smaller field. The algebraic numbers are the complex numbers that are algebraic over Q\mathbb{Q}.

What this node needs for W2
  • edge instance_of in: one example (0 of 1)
  • edge not_instance_of in: one non-example that fails one clause (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a node is. They do not measure its truth.

What this needs

To read this node, read these 12 nodes in this order. The foundations come first, and the list ends with this node.

Each node uses the nodes above it. The colour of the bar on a box shows the evidence level, and the box also gives it as text. The list below has the same nodes.
