Algebraic closure

Definition

Let KK be a field. An algebraic closure of KK is a field extension K‾/K\overline{K}/K such that K‾/K\overline{K}/K is algebraic and K‾\overline{K} is algebraically closed.

Remarks

The field C\mathbb{C} is an algebraic closure of R\mathbb{R}, by the fundamental theorem of algebra. The field Q‾\overline{\mathbb{Q}} of algebraic numbers is an algebraic closure of Q\mathbb{Q}. The field C\mathbb{C} is not, because C/Q\mathbb{C}/\mathbb{Q} is not algebraic. If KK is infinite, then K‾\overline{K} has the same cardinality as KK. If KK is finite, then K‾\overline{K} is countably infinite. An algebraic closure is a largest algebraic extension of KK, and a smallest algebraically closed field that contains KK.

Explanations

L1 human

The algebraic closure adds to a field all the roots of all its polynomials, and nothing else. For the rationals, it gives the algebraic numbers, not all the complex numbers.

What this node needs for W2
  • edge instance_of in: one example (0 of 1)
  • edge not_instance_of in: one non-example that fails one clause (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a node is. They do not measure its truth.

What this needs

To read this node, read these 20 nodes in this order. The foundations come first, and the list ends with this node.

Each node uses the nodes above it. The colour of the bar on a box shows the evidence level, and the box also gives it as text. The list below has the same nodes.
