Split polynomial

Definition

Let LL be a field and let f∈L[x]f \in L[x] be nonzero. The polynomial ff splits over LL if there are c,a1,…,an∈Lc, a_1, \dots, a_n \in L with f=c (x−a1)(x−a2)⋯(x−an).f = c \, (x - a_1)(x - a_2) \cdots (x - a_n).

Remarks

Then cc is the leading coefficient of ff, n=deg⁡fn = \deg f, and a1,…,ana_1, \dots, a_n are the roots of ff, not necessarily distinct. The polynomial x2−2x^2 - 2 splits over R\mathbb{R}, but not over Q\mathbb{Q}. The polynomial x2+1x^2 + 1 splits over C\mathbb{C}, but not over R\mathbb{R}. Over an algebraically closed field, every nonzero polynomial splits.

Explanations

L1 human

A polynomial splits when you can factor it completely into linear factors. Then you can read all its roots from the factors.

What this node needs for W1
  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a node is. They do not measure its truth.

What this needs

To read this node, read these 6 nodes in this order. The foundations come first, and the list ends with this node.

Each node uses the nodes above it. The colour of the bar on a box shows the evidence level, and the box also gives it as text. The list below has the same nodes.
