definition

Minimal polynomial of an algebraic element

Definition

Let L/KL/K be a field extension and let a∈La \in L be algebraic over KK. The minimal polynomial of aa over KK is the monic polynomial ma∈K[x]m_a \in K[x] of smallest degree such that ma(a)=0m_a(a) = 0.

Remarks

The minimal polynomial exists and is unique. If two monic polynomials of the smallest degree vanish at aa, their difference has smaller degree and vanishes at aa, so it is zero. The minimal polynomial is irreducible, and it divides each polynomial that vanishes at aa. The minimal polynomial of 2\sqrt{2} over Q\mathbb{Q} is x2−2x^2 - 2. Over R\mathbb{R}, it is x−2x - \sqrt{2}. The minimal polynomial of ii over R\mathbb{R} is x2+1x^2 + 1.

Explanations

L1 human

Among all the polynomial equations that an algebraic element satisfies, the minimal polynomial is the simplest one. It depends on the base field: a bigger base field can give a smaller minimal polynomial.

What this node needs for W2
  • edge instance_of in: one example (0 of 1)
  • edge not_instance_of in: one non-example that fails one clause (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a node is. They do not measure its truth.

What this needs

To read this node, read these 16 nodes in this order. The foundations come first, and the list ends with this node.

Each node uses the nodes above it. The colour of the bar on a box shows the evidence level, and the box also gives it as text. The list below has the same nodes.
