Multiplicative order

Definition

Let nn be a positive integer and let aa be an integer coprime to nn. The multiplicative order of aa modulo nn is the smallest positive integer kk such that ak≡1(modn)a^k \equiv 1 \pmod n. The notation for it is ord⁡n(a)\operatorname{ord}_n(a).

Remarks

The order exists, because aφ(n)≡1(modn)a^{\varphi(n)} \equiv 1 \pmod n by Euler's theorem. For each integer m≥0m \ge 0, am≡1(modn)a^m \equiv 1 \pmod n if and only if ord⁡n(a)∣m\operatorname{ord}_n(a) \mid m. In particular, ord⁡n(a)∣φ(n)\operatorname{ord}_n(a) \mid \varphi(n). The order of aa modulo nn is the order of a‾\overline{a} in the group (Z/nZ)×(\mathbb{Z}/n\mathbb{Z})^\times. For example, ord⁡7(2)=3\operatorname{ord}_7(2) = 3, because 21=22^1 = 2, 22=42^2 = 4 and 23=8≡1(mod7)2^3 = 8 \equiv 1 \pmod 7.

Explanations

Compute the powers a,a2,a3,…a, a^2, a^3, \dots modulo nn, until you reach 11. The number of steps is the order. Modulo 1010, the powers of 33 are 3,9,7,13, 9, 7, 1, so the order of 33 modulo 1010 is 44.

What this node needs for W2
  • edge instance_of in: one example (0 of 1)
  • edge not_instance_of in: one non-example that fails one clause (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a node is. They do not measure its truth.

What this needs

To read this node, read these 7 nodes in this order. The foundations come first, and the list ends with this node.

Each node uses the nodes above it. The colour of the bar on a box shows the evidence level, and the box also gives it as text. The list below has the same nodes.
