Congruence modulo n

Definition

Let nn be a positive integer, and let aa and bb be integers. The integer aa is congruent to bb modulo nn when nn divides a−ba - b. The notation is a≡b(modn)a \equiv b \pmod{n}. The integer nn is the modulus of the congruence.

Remarks

Equivalently, a≡b(modn)a \equiv b \pmod n if and only if aa and bb have the same remainder on division by nn, that is, a mod n=b mod na \bmod n = b \bmod n. Congruence modulo nn is an equivalence relation on the integers. Its classes are the residue classes modulo nn. For example, 38≡14(mod12)38 \equiv 14 \pmod{12}, because 12∣2412 \mid 24. Some texts allow each integer nn as a modulus. Then congruence modulo 00 is equality, and congruence modulo −n-n is congruence modulo nn.

Explanations

L1 human

Two integers are congruent modulo nn when they differ by a multiple of nn. On a 1212-hour clock, 1414 o'clock and 22 o'clock show the same time, because 14≡2(mod12)14 \equiv 2 \pmod{12}.

What this node needs for W1
  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a node is. They do not measure its truth.

What this needs

To read this node, read these 2 nodes in this order. The foundations come first, and the list ends with this node.

Each node uses the nodes above it. The colour of the bar on a box shows the evidence level, and the box also gives it as text. The list below has the same nodes.

What depends on this

54 nodes use this node, directly or through other nodes.
