Discrete logarithm

Definition

Let GG be a finite cyclic group of order NN, with a generator gg. For each h∈Gh \in G, the discrete logarithm of hh to the base gg is the unique integer kk with 0≤k<N0 \le k < N such that gk=hg^k = h. The notation is k=log⁡ghk = \log_g h.

Remarks

In elementary number theory, G=(Z/nZ)×G = (\mathbb{Z}/n\mathbb{Z})^\times and gg is a primitive root modulo nn. Then log⁡ga\log_g a is also called the index of aa, and N=φ(n)N = \varphi(n). The rule log⁡g(h1h2)≡log⁡gh1+log⁡gh2(modN)\log_g (h_1 h_2) \equiv \log_g h_1 + \log_g h_2 \pmod N holds, as for ordinary logarithms. For example, 33 is a primitive root modulo 77, and 34=81≡4(mod7)3^4 = 81 \equiv 4 \pmod 7. So log⁡34=4\log_3 4 = 4 modulo 77. No efficient general algorithm to compute discrete logarithms is known. The Diffie–Hellman key exchange uses this fact.

Explanations

Modular exponentiation computes gk mod pg^k \bmod p from kk. The discrete logarithm goes back from the result to kk. For small numbers, a table of powers is enough. For numbers with hundreds of digits, the problem seems very hard.

What this node needs for W2
  • edge instance_of in: one example (0 of 1)
  • edge not_instance_of in: one non-example that fails one clause (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a node is. They do not measure its truth.

What this needs

To read this node, read these 9 nodes in this order. The foundations come first, and the list ends with this node.

Each node uses the nodes above it. The colour of the bar on a box shows the evidence level, and the box also gives it as text. The list below has the same nodes.
