Greatest common divisor

Definition

Let aa and bb be integers that are not both 00. A common divisor of aa and bb is an integer dd such that d∣ad \mid a and d∣bd \mid b. The greatest common divisor gcd⁡(a,b)\gcd(a, b) is the largest common divisor of aa and bb. By convention, gcd⁡(0,0)=0\gcd(0, 0) = 0.

Remarks

The number gcd⁡(a,b)\gcd(a, b) is positive when aa and bb are not both 00, because 11 is a common divisor. An equivalent definition: gcd⁡(a,b)\gcd(a, b) is the unique nonnegative common divisor of aa and bb that each common divisor divides. This form also gives gcd⁡(0,0)=0\gcd(0, 0) = 0. For all integers aa, gcd⁡(a,0)=∣a∣\gcd(a, 0) = |a|. The Euclidean algorithm computes gcd⁡(a,b)\gcd(a, b).

Explanations

L1 human

List the positive divisors of each number, and take the largest number that is in both lists. The divisors of 1212 are 1,2,3,4,6,121, 2, 3, 4, 6, 12, and the divisors of 1818 are 1,2,3,6,9,181, 2, 3, 6, 9, 18. Thus gcd⁡(12,18)=6\gcd(12, 18) = 6.

What this node needs for W2
  • edge instance_of in: one example (0 of 1)
  • edge not_instance_of in: one non-example that fails one clause (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a node is. They do not measure its truth.

What this needs

To read this node, read these 2 nodes in this order. The foundations come first, and the list ends with this node.

Each node uses the nodes above it. The colour of the bar on a box shows the evidence level, and the box also gives it as text. The list below has the same nodes.

What depends on this
