Fermat pseudoprime

Definition

Let aa be an integer with a>1a > 1. A Fermat pseudoprime to the base aa is a composite number nn such that an−1≡1(modn)a^{n-1} \equiv 1 \pmod n.

Remarks

Fermat's little theorem says that each prime nn with n∤an \nmid a satisfies an−1≡1(modn)a^{n-1} \equiv 1 \pmod n. A Fermat pseudoprime is a composite number that passes the same test. The smallest Fermat pseudoprime to the base 22 is 341=11⋅31341 = 11 \cdot 31. The condition implies gcd⁡(a,n)=1\gcd(a, n) = 1. A composite number that is a Fermat pseudoprime to each base coprime to it is a Carmichael number.

Explanations

L1 human

The Fermat primality test declares nn "probably prime" when an−1≡1(modn)a^{n-1} \equiv 1 \pmod n. A Fermat pseudoprime is a composite number that fools this test for the base aa. For example, 2340≡1(mod341)2^{340} \equiv 1 \pmod{341}, but 341341 is not prime.

What this node needs for W1
  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a node is. They do not measure its truth.

What this needs

To read this node, read these 6 nodes in this order. The foundations come first, and the list ends with this node.

Each node uses the nodes above it. The colour of the bar on a box shows the evidence level, and the box also gives it as text. The list below has the same nodes.
