Matrix multiplication

Definition

Let RR be a ring, let A=(aij)A = (a_{ij}) be an m×nm \times n matrix over RR, and let B=(bjk)B = (b_{jk}) be an n×pn \times p matrix over RR. The product ABAB is the m×pm \times p matrix with entries (AB)ik=∑j=1naijbjk(AB)_{ik} = \sum_{j=1}^{n} a_{ij} b_{jk} for 1≤i≤m1 \le i \le m and 1≤k≤p1 \le k \le p.

Remarks

The product ABAB is defined only when the number of columns of AA equals the number of rows of BB. Column kk of ABAB is the matrix–vector product of AA with column kk of BB. The product is associative and distributive, but it is not commutative. If AA and BB are the matrices of two linear maps, then ABAB is the matrix of their composition.

Explanations

L1 human

To find the entry in row ii and column kk of ABAB, go along row ii of AA and down column kk of BB. Multiply the pairs of numbers and add the products. For example, (1201)(34)=(114)\begin{pmatrix} 1 & 2 \\ 0 & 1 \end{pmatrix} \begin{pmatrix} 3 \\ 4 \end{pmatrix} = \begin{pmatrix} 11 \\ 4 \end{pmatrix}.

What this node needs for W2
  • edge instance_of in: one example (0 of 1)
  • edge not_instance_of in: one non-example that fails one clause (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a node is. They do not measure its truth.

What this needs

To read this node, read these 2 nodes in this order. The foundations come first, and the list ends with this node.

Each node uses the nodes above it. The colour of the bar on a box shows the evidence level, and the box also gives it as text. The list below has the same nodes.
  • no evidence level

What depends on this

28 nodes use this node, directly or through other nodes.
