Triangularisation

Statement

Let FF be a field and let AA be an n×nn \times n matrix over FF. Then AA is similar to an upper triangular matrix over FF if and only if the characteristic polynomial of AA splits over FF. Here, to split means to be a product of linear factors. In particular, over an algebraically closed field, such as C\C, each square matrix is similar to an upper triangular matrix.

Remarks

The diagonal entries of the triangular matrix are the eigenvalues of AA, with their algebraic multiplicities. The proof is by induction: choose an eigenvector, extend it to a basis, and work on the quotient space. Over C\C, the matrix PP can even be chosen unitary; this is the Schur decomposition.

Explanations

L1 human

Not every matrix can be diagonalised, but over C\C every matrix can be made triangular by a change of basis. A triangular form is almost as useful: its eigenvalues are on the diagonal. Over R\R, a rotation matrix cannot be triangularised, because it has no real eigenvalue.

What this node needs for W1
  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a node is. They do not measure its truth.

What this needs

To read this node, read these 14 nodes in this order. The foundations come first, and the list ends with this node.

Each node uses the nodes above it. The colour of the bar on a box shows the evidence level, and the box also gives it as text. The list below has the same nodes.
