statement theorem

Liouville's theorem

Statement

Let f:C→Cf : \mathbb{C} \to \mathbb{C} be an entire function. Assume that ff is bounded: there is a real number MM with ∣f(z)∣≤M|f(z)| \le M for each z∈Cz \in \mathbb{C}. Then ff is constant.

Remarks

Proof: let c∈Cc \in \mathbb{C}. By Cauchy's estimates, ∣f′(c)∣≤M/r|f'(c)| \le M / r for each r>0r > 0. So f′(c)=0f'(c) = 0 for each cc, and ff is constant. For example, sin⁡\sin is entire and not constant, so it is not bounded on C\mathbb{C}. On R\mathbb{R} it is bounded, which shows that the theorem has no real analogue. The theorem gives a short proof of the fundamental theorem of algebra.

Explanations

L1 human

A holomorphic function on the whole plane cannot stay inside a bounded region unless it does not move at all. Each nonconstant entire function, for example zz, eze^z or cos⁡z\cos z, takes values that are as large as you like.

What this node needs for W2
  • edge about out: the concepts that the statement is about (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a node is. They do not measure its truth.
