Cauchy's integral formula for derivatives

Statement

Let U⊆CU \subseteq \mathbb{C} be an open set and let f:U→Cf : U \to \mathbb{C} be holomorphic on UU. Let c∈Cc \in \mathbb{C} and r>0r > 0 be such that the closed disc {z:∣z−c∣≤r}\{z : |z - c| \le r\} is contained in UU. Then for each integer n≥0n \ge 0 and each a∈Ca \in \mathbb{C} with ∣a−c∣<r|a - c| < r, f(n)(a)=n!2πi∮∣z−c∣=rf(z)(z−a)n+1 dz,f^{(n)}(a) = \frac{n!}{2 \pi i} \oint_{|z - c| = r} \frac{f(z)}{(z - a)^{n+1}} \, dz, where f(n)f^{(n)} is the nn-th complex derivative of ff. This derivative exists by holomorphic functions are infinitely differentiable.

Remarks

For n=0n = 0, this is Cauchy's integral formula. Formally, the formula comes from differentiating 1z−a\frac{1}{z - a} nn times under the integral sign with respect to aa. For example, with f(z)=ezf(z) = e^z, c=a=0c = a = 0 and r=1r = 1: ∮∣z∣=1ezzn+1 dz=2πin!\oint_{|z| = 1} \frac{e^z}{z^{n+1}} \, dz = \frac{2 \pi i}{n!}. It gives Cauchy's estimates for the derivatives.

Explanations

L1 human

The values of a holomorphic function on a circle determine not only its values inside, but also all its derivatives inside. To get the nn-th derivative, you put a higher power of z−az - a in the denominator and multiply by n!n!.

What this node needs for W1
  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a node is. They do not measure its truth.
