Estimation lemma

Statement

Let γ:[a,b]→C\gamma : [a, b] \to \mathbb{C} be a continuous and piecewise continuously differentiable path with length L(γ)=∫ab∣γ′(t)∣ dtL(\gamma) = \int_a^b |\gamma'(t)| \, dt. Let ff be a complex function that is continuous on the image of γ\gamma. Let M≥0M \ge 0 be a real number with ∣f(z)∣≤M|f(z)| \le M for each zz on the image of γ\gamma. Then the contour integral of ff along γ\gamma satisfies ∣∫γf(z) dz∣≤M L(γ).\left| \int_\gamma f(z) \, dz \right| \le M \, L(\gamma).

Remarks

For a circle integral over ∣z−c∣=R|z - c| = R, the bound is ∣∮f(z) dz∣≤2πRM\left| \oint f(z) \, dz \right| \le 2 \pi R M. Proof: ∣∫abg(t) dt∣≤∫ab∣g(t)∣ dt\left| \int_a^b g(t) \, dt \right| \le \int_a^b |g(t)| \, dt for a complex function gg, and ∣f(γ(t))γ′(t)∣≤M∣γ′(t)∣|f(\gamma(t)) \gamma'(t)| \le M |\gamma'(t)|. A typical use shows that the integral over a large half-circle goes to 00 as the radius goes to ∞\infty.

Explanations

L1 human

The integral cannot be larger than the largest size of the function times the length of the path. For example, if ∣f∣≤1|f| \le 1 on a circle of radius 33, then the integral over the circle has size at most 6π6\pi.

What this node needs for W1
  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a node is. They do not measure its truth.

What this needs

To read this node, read these 5 nodes in this order. The foundations come first, and the list ends with this node.

Each node uses the nodes above it. The colour of the bar on a box shows the evidence level, and the box also gives it as text. The list below has the same nodes.
  • no evidence level
  1. Complex numbers object
  2. Complex exponential definition
  3. Contour integral definition
  4. Circle integral definition
  5. Estimation lemma statement

What depends on this

3 nodes use this node, directly or through other nodes.
