Unique factorisation domain

Definition

A unique factorisation domain is an integral domain RR with these two properties.

  1. Every nonzero element a∈Ra \in R that is not a unit is a product a=p1p2⋯pna = p_1 p_2 \cdots p_n of irreducible elements, with n≥1n \ge 1.
  2. The factorization is unique up to order and units. If p1⋯pn=q1⋯qmp_1 \cdots p_n = q_1 \cdots q_m with all pi,qjp_i, q_j irreducible, then n=mn = m. Also, there is a permutation σ\sigma of {1,…,n}\{1, \dots, n\} such that pip_i and qσ(i)q_{\sigma(i)} are associates for each ii.

Remarks

The integers are a unique factorisation domain: this is the fundamental theorem of arithmetic. Every principal ideal domain is a unique factorisation domain, and so is every polynomial ring over a unique factorisation domain. The ring Z[−5]\mathbb{Z}[\sqrt{-5}] is not a unique factorisation domain. In a unique factorisation domain, irreducible elements are prime.

Explanations

L1 human

In the integers, 60=2⋅2⋅3⋅560 = 2 \cdot 2 \cdot 3 \cdot 5, and every other factorization into primes uses the same primes, up to order and signs. A unique factorisation domain is a ring where this works for every nonzero nonunit. Units like −1-1 do not count as a different factorization.

What this node needs for W2
  • edge instance_of in: one example (0 of 1)
  • edge not_instance_of in: one non-example that fails one clause (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a node is. They do not measure its truth.

What this needs

To read this node, read these 10 nodes in this order. The foundations come first, and the list ends with this node.

Each node uses the nodes above it. The colour of the bar on a box shows the evidence level, and the box also gives it as text. The list below has the same nodes.
