Associate elements

Definition

Let RR be a commutative ring and let a,b∈Ra, b \in R. The elements aa and bb are associates, written a∼ba \sim b, if there is a unit u∈Ru \in R with b=uab = u a.

Remarks

Being associates is an equivalence relation. In an integral domain, a∼ba \sim b if and only if a∣ba \mid b and b∣ab \mid a, if and only if (a)=(b)(a) = (b). In Z\mathbb{Z}, the associates of nn are nn and −n-n. In Z[i]\mathbb{Z}[i], the associates of 1+i1 + i are 1+i1 + i, −1−i-1 - i, −1+i-1 + i and 1−i1 - i.

Explanations

Associates are elements that differ only by a unit factor. For divisibility they behave in the same way. In the integers, 66 and −6-6 are associates.

What this node needs for W1
  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a node is. They do not measure its truth.

What this needs

To read this node, read these 6 nodes in this order. The foundations come first, and the list ends with this node.

Each node uses the nodes above it. The colour of the bar on a box shows the evidence level, and the box also gives it as text. The list below has the same nodes.

What depends on this

19 nodes use this node, directly or through other nodes.
