Uniform continuity

Definition

Let D⊆RD \subseteq \mathbb{R} and let f ⁣:D→Rf \colon D \to \mathbb{R} be a function. The function ff is uniformly continuous if the following holds. For each ε>0\varepsilon > 0 there is δ>0\delta > 0 with ∣f(x)−f(y)∣<ε|f(x) - f(y)| < \varepsilon for all x,y∈Dx, y \in D with ∣x−y∣<δ|x - y| < \delta.

Remarks

Each uniformly continuous function is continuous. In the epsilon-delta form of continuity, δ\delta may depend on the point. Here one δ\delta works for all points. The function x2x^2 is continuous on R\mathbb{R} but not uniformly continuous. Mathlib defines it for uniform spaces, as UniformContinuous. Eduard Heine published the first definition of uniform continuity, in 1870.

Explanations

L1 human

For a uniformly continuous function, one input tolerance works everywhere in the domain. The graph has no places where it becomes steeper and steeper without bound.

What this node needs for W2
  • edge instance_of in: one example (0 of 1)
  • edge not_instance_of in: one non-example that fails one clause (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a node is. They do not measure its truth.

What this needs

To read this node, read these 5 nodes in this order. The foundations come first, and the list ends with this node.

Each node uses the nodes above it. The colour of the bar on a box shows the evidence level, and the box also gives it as text. The list below has the same nodes.
  • no evidence level
  1. Limit point of a set definition
  2. Limit of a function definition
  3. Continuity at a point definition
  4. Epsilon-delta definition of continuity statement
  5. Uniform continuity definition

What depends on this

11 nodes use this node, directly or through other nodes.
