Uniform continuity on a set

Definition

Let D⊆RD \subseteq \mathbb{R}, let f ⁣:D→Rf \colon D \to \mathbb{R} be a function, and let S⊆DS \subseteq D. The function ff is uniformly continuous on SS if the following holds. For each ε>0\varepsilon > 0 there is δ>0\delta > 0 with ∣f(x)−f(y)∣<ε|f(x) - f(y)| < \varepsilon for all x,y∈Sx, y \in S with ∣x−y∣<δ|x - y| < \delta.

Remarks

So ff is uniformly continuous on SS when its restriction to SS is uniformly continuous. A function can be uniformly continuous on a set but not on a larger set. For example, x2x^2 is uniformly continuous on [0,1][0, 1] but not on R\mathbb{R}. Mathlib defines it as UniformContinuousOn.

Explanations

L1 human

Uniform continuity on SS only looks at pairs of points inside SS. Points outside SS play no role.

What this node needs for W1
  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a node is. They do not measure its truth.

What this needs

To read this node, read these 6 nodes in this order. The foundations come first, and the list ends with this node.

Each node uses the nodes above it. The colour of the bar on a box shows the evidence level, and the box also gives it as text. The list below has the same nodes.
  • no evidence level
  1. Limit point of a set definition
  2. Limit of a function definition
  3. Continuity at a point definition
  4. Epsilon-delta definition of continuity statement
  5. Uniform continuity definition
  6. Uniform continuity on a set definition

What depends on this

7 nodes use this node, directly or through other nodes.
