concept

Total derivative

Summary

Let ff map an open subset of Rn\mathbb{R}^n to Rm\mathbb{R}^m. The total derivative of ff at a point aa is the linear map Df(a) ⁣:Rn→RmDf(a) \colon \mathbb{R}^n \to \mathbb{R}^m that best approximates ff near aa. That is, f(a+h)=f(a)+Df(a)(h)+o(∥h∥)f(a + h) = f(a) + Df(a)(h) + o(\|h\|) as h→0h \to 0. It is the Fréchet derivative in the case of Euclidean spaces. Its matrix in the standard bases is the Jacobian matrix of ff at aa.

Remarks

The total derivative accounts for changes in all variables at once. A partial derivative accounts for a change in one variable only. When ff depends on tt both directly and through other functions of tt, the total derivative ddtf(t,x(t))\dfrac{d}{dt} f(t, x(t)) is the sum ∂f∂t+∂f∂xdxdt\dfrac{\partial f}{\partial t} + \dfrac{\partial f}{\partial x} \dfrac{dx}{dt}, by the chain rule.

Explanations

L1 human

For a function of one variable, the derivative at a point is a number: the slope of the tangent line. For a function of several variables, the derivative at a point is a linear map: it tells how the output changes for each small step in any direction.

What this node needs for W2
  • edge defines in: at least one definition (0 of 1)
  • edge instance_of in: at least two examples (0 of 2)
  • edge not_instance_of in: at least one non-example (0 of 1)
  • edge specializes both: the more general notions and the special cases (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a node is. They do not measure its truth.
