One-form

Definition

Let U⊆RnU \subseteq \mathbb{R}^n be open. A one-form on UU is a differential form of degree 11, that is, a sum ω=f1 dx1+⋯+fn dxn\omega = f_1 \, dx_1 + \dots + f_n \, dx_n with functions fi ⁣:U→Rf_i \colon U \to \mathbb{R}. At x∈Ux \in U, it gives the linear map ωx(v)=f1(x)v1+⋯+fn(x)vn\omega_x(v) = f_1(x) v_1 + \dots + f_n(x) v_n for v∈Rnv \in \mathbb{R}^n.

Remarks

For a differentiable function gg on UU, the differential of gg is the one-form dg=∑i∂g∂xi dxidg = \sum_i \frac{\partial g}{\partial x_i} \, dx_i. So dgx(v)dg_x(v) is the directional derivative of gg at xx in direction vv. For a continuous ω\omega and a piecewise C1C^1 curve γ ⁣:[a,b]→U\gamma \colon [a, b] \to U, the integral is ∫γω=∫abωγ(t)(γ′(t)) dt\int_\gamma \omega = \int_a^b \omega_{\gamma(t)}\big( \gamma'(t) \big) \, dt. This is the line integral of the vector field (f1,…,fn)(f_1, \dots, f_n). Under this correspondence, dgdg corresponds to ∇g\nabla g, and ω\omega is of the form dgdg exactly when the field is conservative. On R2∖{0}\mathbb{R}^2 \setminus \{0\}, the angle form dθ=−y dx+x dyx2+y2d\theta = \frac{-y \, dx + x \, dy}{x^2 + y^2} is a one-form. Its integral around a closed curve is 2π2\pi times the winding number of the curve about the origin.

Explanations

L1 human

A one-form is a rule that, at each point, turns a direction vector into a number, in a linear way. Integrating a one-form along a curve adds up these numbers for the velocity of the curve. It is the same thing as the work of a vector field.

What this node needs for W2
  • edge instance_of in: one example (0 of 1)
  • edge not_instance_of in: one non-example that fails one clause (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a node is. They do not measure its truth.
