counterexample

Curl-free field that is not conservative

Counterexample

One could guess that each C1C^1 vector field with zero curl on an open set is conservative. This is false. Let U={(x,y,z)∈R3:(x,y)≠(0,0)}U = \{(x, y, z) \in \mathbb{R}^3 : (x, y) \ne (0, 0)\}, which is R3\mathbb{R}^3 minus the zz-axis, and let F(x,y,z)=(−yx2+y2, xx2+y2, 0).F(x, y, z) = \left( \frac{-y}{x^2 + y^2}, \ \frac{x}{x^2 + y^2}, \ 0 \right). Then ∇×F=0\nabla \times F = 0 on UU, but FF is not conservative on UU.

Remarks

The third component of ∇×F\nabla \times F is ∂x(x/(x2+y2))−∂y(−y/(x2+y2))=y2−x2(x2+y2)2−y2−x2(x2+y2)2=0\partial_x \big( x / (x^2 + y^2) \big) - \partial_y \big( -y / (x^2 + y^2) \big) = \frac{y^2 - x^2}{(x^2 + y^2)^2} - \frac{y^2 - x^2}{(x^2 + y^2)^2} = 0, and the other two components are zero. On the unit circle γ(t)=(cos⁡t,sin⁡t,0)\gamma(t) = (\cos t, \sin t, 0), t∈[0,2π]t \in [0, 2\pi], we have F(γ(t))⋅γ′(t)=1F(\gamma(t)) \cdot \gamma'(t) = 1. So the circulation is 2π≠02\pi \ne 0, and path independence fails. The domain UU is not simply connected, so this does not contradict the theorem for convex or simply connected sets. Locally, F=∇θF = \nabla \theta, where θ\theta is the polar angle of (x,y)(x, y). But no continuous choice of θ\theta exists on all of UU.

Explanations

L1 human

The field circles around the zz-axis, and its strength falls off with distance in just the right way to have no local swirl. But a loop around the axis picks up work 2π2\pi, so no potential can exist. The hole in the domain causes this.

What this node needs for W1
  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
  • edge refutes or not_instance_of out (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a node is. They do not measure its truth.
