Scalar potential

Definition

Let U⊆RnU \subseteq \mathbb{R}^n be open, and let F ⁣:U→RnF \colon U \to \mathbb{R}^n be a continuous vector field. A scalar potential of FF is a function ϕ ⁣:U→R\phi \colon U \to \mathbb{R} of class C1C^1 with ∇ϕ=F\nabla \phi = F on UU.

Remarks

In physics, a potential is often a function VV with F=−∇VF = -\nabla V, so that VV is a potential energy. The two conventions differ by a sign. If UU is connected, two scalar potentials of FF differ by a constant. Indeed, their difference has zero gradient on UU. On a connected open set UU one finds a potential by fixing p∈Up \in U and setting ϕ(x)=∫γF⋅dr\phi(x) = \int_\gamma F \cdot d\mathbf{r} for a path γ\gamma from pp to xx. This works when FF is conservative. Example: the gravitational field F(x)=−x/∥x∥3F(x) = -x / \|x\|^3 on R3∖{0}\mathbb{R}^3 \setminus \{0\} has the scalar potential ϕ(x)=1/∥x∥\phi(x) = 1 / \|x\|.

Explanations

L1 human

A scalar potential is a height function for a vector field. The field points in the direction in which the potential grows fastest, and its length is the rate of growth.

What this node needs for W2
  • edge instance_of in: one example (0 of 1)
  • edge not_instance_of in: one non-example that fails one clause (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a node is. They do not measure its truth.

What this needs

To read this node, read these 18 nodes in this order. The foundations come first, and the list ends with this node.

Each node uses the nodes above it. The colour of the bar on a box shows the evidence level, and the box also gives it as text. The list below has the same nodes.
