statement theorem

Determinant of a matrix exponential

Statement

Let K\mathbb{K} be R\R or C\C, and let AA be an n×nn \times n matrix over K\mathbb{K}. Then det⁡(eA)=etr⁡A,\det(e^A) = e^{\tr A}, where eAe^A is the matrix exponential, det⁡\det is the determinant and tr⁡\tr is the trace.

Remarks

If AA is triangular over C\C with diagonal entries λi\lambda_i, then eAe^A is triangular with diagonal entries eλie^{\lambda_i}, and both sides equal eλ1+⋯+λne^{\lambda_1 + \cdots + \lambda_n}. The general case follows by triangularisation over C\C. It shows again that eAe^A is invertible, because etr⁡A≠0e^{\tr A} \ne 0. If tr⁡A=0\tr A = 0, then eAe^A lies in the special linear group.

Explanations

L1 human

The determinant of the exponential of a matrix is the exponential of its trace. This links the product of the eigenvalues of eAe^A with the sum of the eigenvalues of AA. It is the matrix form of the rule eaeb=ea+be^{a} e^{b} = e^{a + b}.

What this node needs for W1
  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a node is. They do not measure its truth.

What this needs

To read this node, read these 11 nodes in this order. The foundations come first, and the list ends with this node.

Each node uses the nodes above it. The colour of the bar on a box shows the evidence level, and the box also gives it as text. The list below has the same nodes.
