Trace of a matrix

Definition

Let RR be a commutative ring and let A=(aij)A = (a_{ij}) be an n×nn \times n square matrix over RR. The trace of AA is tr⁡A=∑i=1naii=a11+a22+⋯+ann.\tr A = \sum_{i=1}^{n} a_{ii} = a_{11} + a_{22} + \cdots + a_{nn}.

Remarks

The trace of (1234)\begin{pmatrix} 1 & 2 \\ 3 & 4 \end{pmatrix} is 55. The trace is linear, it is invariant under transpose, and tr⁡(AB)=tr⁡(BA)\tr(AB) = \tr(BA). Similar matrices have the same trace, so the trace of a linear map is well defined. Over an algebraically closed field, the trace is the sum of the eigenvalues, counted with multiplicity.

Explanations

L1 human

The trace adds up the numbers on the main diagonal of a square matrix. It is a single number that does not change when we change the basis. For the identity matrix of order nn, the trace is nn.

What this node needs for W2
  • edge instance_of in: one example (0 of 1)
  • edge not_instance_of in: one non-example that fails one clause (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a node is. They do not measure its truth.

What this needs

To read this node, read these 3 nodes in this order. The foundations come first, and the list ends with this node.

Each node uses the nodes above it. The colour of the bar on a box shows the evidence level, and the box also gives it as text. The list below has the same nodes.

What depends on this

8 nodes use this node, directly or through other nodes.
