Complex conjugate

Definition

Let z=a+biz = a + b i be a complex number, with aa and bb real. The complex conjugate of zz is the complex number zˉ=a−bi\bar{z} = a - b i.

Remarks

Another common notation is z∗z^*. Conjugation respects the operations: z+w‾=zˉ+wˉ\overline{z + w} = \bar{z} + \bar{w} and zw‾=zˉ wˉ\overline{z w} = \bar{z} \, \bar{w}. Also zˉˉ=z\bar{\bar{z}} = z. A complex number zz is real exactly when zˉ=z\bar{z} = z. The product zzˉz \bar{z} is the real number ∣z∣2|z|^2, see a complex number times its conjugate.

Explanations

L1 human

To conjugate a complex number, change the sign of its imaginary part. For example, the conjugate of 2+5i2 + 5 i is 2−5i2 - 5 i, and the conjugate of 77 is 77.

What this node needs for W2
  • edge instance_of in: one example (0 of 1)
  • edge not_instance_of in: one non-example that fails one clause (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a node is. They do not measure its truth.

What this needs

To read this node, read these 3 nodes in this order. The foundations come first, and the list ends with this node.

Each node uses the nodes above it. The colour of the bar on a box shows the evidence level, and the box also gives it as text. The list below has the same nodes.

What depends on this
