statement proposition

Inverse of a complex number

Statement

Let zz be a complex number with z≠0z \neq 0. Then z−1=zˉ∣z∣2.z^{-1} = \frac{\bar{z}}{|z|^2}. With z=a+biz = a + b i and a,ba, b real, this is z−1=aa2+b2−ba2+b2 iz^{-1} = \dfrac{a}{a^2 + b^2} - \dfrac{b}{a^2 + b^2} \, i.

Remarks

Proof: zzˉ=∣z∣2z \bar{z} = |z|^2 by the formula for a complex number times its conjugate, and ∣z∣2>0|z|^2 > 0 because z≠0z \neq 0. Divide by ∣z∣2|z|^2. To compute a quotient w/zw / z, multiply the numerator and the denominator by zˉ\bar{z}.

Explanations

L1 human

To divide by a complex number, multiply above and below by its conjugate. Then the denominator becomes a positive real number. For example, 11+i=1−i(1+i)(1−i)=1−i2\dfrac{1}{1 + i} = \dfrac{1 - i}{(1 + i)(1 - i)} = \dfrac{1 - i}{2}.

What this node needs for W1
  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a node is. They do not measure its truth.

What this needs

To read this node, read these 14 nodes in this order. The foundations come first, and the list ends with this node.

Each node uses the nodes above it. The colour of the bar on a box shows the evidence level, and the box also gives it as text. The list below has the same nodes.
