statement proposition

Modulus is multiplicative

Statement

For all complex numbers zz and ww, ∣zw∣=∣z∣ ∣w∣,|z w| = |z| \, |w|, where ∣⋅∣|\cdot| is the modulus.

Remarks

Proof: ∣zw∣2=zwzw‾=(zzˉ)(wwˉ)=∣z∣2∣w∣2|z w|^2 = z w \overline{z w} = (z \bar{z})(w \bar{w}) = |z|^2 |w|^2, and both sides are nonnegative. For z=a+biz = a + b i and w=c+diw = c + d i, this is the identity (a2+b2)(c2+d2)=(ac−bd)2+(ad+bc)2(a^2 + b^2)(c^2 + d^2) = (a c - b d)^2 + (a d + b c)^2. On the real numbers, it gives that the absolute value is multiplicative.

Explanations

L1 human

The length of a product is the product of the lengths. For example, ∣(1+i)(1−i)∣=∣2∣=2|(1 + i)(1 - i)| = |2| = 2, and ∣1+i∣⋅∣1−i∣=2⋅2=2|1 + i| \cdot |1 - i| = \sqrt{2} \cdot \sqrt{2} = 2.

What this node needs for W1
  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a node is. They do not measure its truth.

What this needs

To read this node, read these 12 nodes in this order. The foundations come first, and the list ends with this node.

Each node uses the nodes above it. The colour of the bar on a box shows the evidence level, and the box also gives it as text. The list below has the same nodes.
