Closed curve

Definition

Let a<ba < b, and let γ ⁣:[a,b]→Rn\gamma \colon [a, b] \to \mathbb{R}^n be a parametrised curve. The curve γ\gamma is closed if γ(a)=γ(b)\gamma(a) = \gamma(b). A closed curve is simple if, in addition, γ(s)≠γ(t)\gamma(s) \ne \gamma(t) for all s<ts < t in [a,b][a, b] other than the pair s=as = a, t=bt = b.

Remarks

The unit circle γ(t)=(cos⁡t,sin⁡t)\gamma(t) = (\cos t, \sin t), t∈[0,2π]t \in [0, 2\pi], is a simple closed curve. The curve t↦(sin⁡2t,sin⁡t)t \mapsto (\sin 2t, \sin t), t∈[0,2π]t \in [0, 2\pi], is closed but not simple: it passes through the origin at t=0t = 0, t=πt = \pi and t=2πt = 2\pi. The line integral of a vector field around a closed curve is often written ∮γF⋅dr\oint_\gamma F \cdot d\mathbf{r}. It is the circulation of FF around γ\gamma. A simple closed curve in the plane bounds a region. This is the setting of Green's theorem.

Explanations

L1 human

A closed curve is a path that comes back to where it started, like a lap around a track. It is simple if it never crosses itself on the way.

What this node needs for W1
  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a node is. They do not measure its truth.

What this needs

To read this node, read these 15 nodes in this order. The foundations come first, and the list ends with this node.

Each node uses the nodes above it. The colour of the bar on a box shows the evidence level, and the box also gives it as text. The list below has the same nodes.
