Absolute value

Definition

Let xx be a real number. The absolute value of xx is the real number ∣x∣={xif x≥0,−xif x<0.|x| = \begin{cases} x & \text{if } x \ge 0, \\ -x & \text{if } x < 0. \end{cases}

Remarks

For each real xx: ∣x∣≥0|x| \ge 0; ∣x∣=0|x| = 0 only for x=0x = 0; ∣−x∣=∣x∣|-x| = |x|; and ∣x∣=max⁡(x,−x)|x| = \max(x, -x). The distance between two real numbers xx and yy is ∣x−y∣|x - y|. For r≥0r \ge 0, the inequality ∣x∣≤r|x| \le r holds exactly when −r≤x≤r-r \le x \le r.

Explanations

L1 human

The absolute value removes the minus sign from a number. On the number line, ∣x∣|x| is the distance from xx to 00, and ∣x−y∣|x - y| is the distance from xx to yy.

What this node needs for W2
  • edge instance_of in: one example (0 of 1)
  • edge not_instance_of in: one non-example that fails one clause (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a node is. They do not measure its truth.

What this needs

To read this node, read these 12 nodes in this order. The foundations come first, and the list ends with this node.

Each node uses the nodes above it. The colour of the bar on a box shows the evidence level, and the box also gives it as text. The list below has the same nodes.
