Reverse triangle inequality

Statement

For all real numbers aa and bb, ∣∣a∣−∣b∣∣≤∣a−b∣.\bigl| |a| - |b| \bigr| \le |a - b|.

Remarks

Proof: the triangle inequality gives ∣a∣=∣(a−b)+b∣≤∣a−b∣+∣b∣|a| = |(a - b) + b| \le |a - b| + |b|, thus ∣a∣−∣b∣≤∣a−b∣|a| - |b| \le |a - b|. Exchange aa and bb for the other sign. It shows that the function x↦∣x∣x \mapsto |x| is continuous on R\mathbb{R}.

Explanations

Two numbers that are close to each other have absolute values that are also close. The difference of the distances to 00 is at most the distance between the two numbers.

What this node needs for W1
  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a node is. They do not measure its truth.

What this needs

To read this node, read these 14 nodes in this order. The foundations come first, and the list ends with this node.

Each node uses the nodes above it. The colour of the bar on a box shows the evidence level, and the box also gives it as text. The list below has the same nodes.
