statement theorem

Uniform limits of holomorphic functions are holomorphic

Statement

Let U⊆CU \subseteq \mathbb{C} be an open set and let f1,f2,…f_1, f_2, \dots be functions U→CU \to \mathbb{C} that are holomorphic on UU. Let f:U→Cf : U \to \mathbb{C} be a function such that fn→ff_n \to f uniformly on each compact subset of UU. Then ff is holomorphic on UU. Moreover, fn′→f′f_n' \to f' uniformly on each compact subset of UU.

Remarks

Proof idea: ff is continuous. On each disc in UU, Cauchy's integral theorem gives ∮∂Tfn=0\oint_{\partial T} f_n = 0 for each triangle TT, so ∮∂Tf=0\oint_{\partial T} f = 0 by the uniform convergence, and Morera's theorem applies. A main use: if a series ∑gk\sum g_k of holomorphic functions converges uniformly on compact subsets of UU, then its sum is holomorphic on UU. There is no real analogue. On [−1,1][-1, 1], the polynomials converge uniformly to ∣x∣|x|, which is not differentiable at 00.

Explanations

L1 human

If holomorphic functions get close to a function ff uniformly, then ff is holomorphic too, and their derivatives get close to the derivative of ff. This lets us build new holomorphic functions as limits of series, for example the zeta function ∑n−z\sum n^{-z}.

What this node needs for W1
  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a node is. They do not measure its truth.
