Hurwitz's theorem

Statement

Let GG be a domain in C\mathbb{C}, that is, a connected open set. Let (fk)(f_k) be a sequence of holomorphic functions on GG that converges uniformly on each compact subset of GG to a function ff. Suppose that ff is not identically zero on GG, and that ff has a zero of order mm at a point z0∈Gz_0 \in G. Then for each sufficiently small ρ>0\rho > 0 there is an integer NN with the following property. For each k≥Nk \ge N, the function fkf_k has exactly mm zeros in the disc ∣z−z0∣<ρ|z - z_0| < \rho, each counted as many times as its order.

Remarks

The limit ff is holomorphic on GG by the theorem on uniform limits. A consequence: if no fkf_k has a zero in GG, then ff either has no zero in GG or is identically zero. A second consequence: if each fkf_k is injective on GG, then ff is injective or constant. The radius ρ\rho must be small: fn(z)=z−1+1nf_n(z) = z - 1 + \frac{1}{n} has one zero in the unit disc, but its limit z−1z - 1 has none there.

Explanations

L1 human

Zeros of holomorphic functions do not suddenly appear or disappear under uniform limits. Near a zero of the limit, each function far along in the sequence has the same number of zeros. The proof compares fkf_k with ff on a small circle, as in Rouché's theorem.
