concept

Truth table

Summary

A truth table is a table that gives the truth value of a compound proposition for each assignment of truth values to its variables. Each row of the table is one assignment, and the last column gives the value of the compound proposition. A proposition with nn variables has a truth table with 2n2^n rows.

Remarks

The truth tables of negation, conjunction, disjunction, implication and the biconditional define these connectives. A proposition is a tautology when its column has only the value true. Two propositions are logically equivalent when their columns are the same.

Explanations

L1 human

A truth table lists every possible case. For p∧qp \land q there are four cases, because pp and qq each have two values. You compute the value of the whole formula in each case, one row at a time.

What this node needs for W2
  • edge defines in: at least one definition (0 of 1)
  • edge instance_of in: at least two examples (0 of 2)
  • edge not_instance_of in: at least one non-example (0 of 1)
  • edge specializes both: the more general notions and the special cases (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a node is. They do not measure its truth.

What this needs

To read this node, read these 6 nodes in this order. The foundations come first, and the list ends with this node.

Each node uses the nodes above it. The colour of the bar on a box shows the evidence level, and the box also gives it as text. The list below has the same nodes.

What depends on this
