example

The sequence r^n tends to infinity for r > 1

Example

Let rr be a real number with r>1r > 1. Then rn→+∞r^n \to +\infty as n→∞n \to \infty, in the sense of a sequence tending to infinity. Write r=1+hr = 1 + h with h>0h > 0. By Bernoulli's inequality, rn≥1+nhr^n \ge 1 + n h for each natural number nn. Let MM be a real number, and choose a natural number NN with Nh>MN h > M. Then rn>Mr^n > M for all n≥Nn \ge N.

Remarks

For r<−1r < -1 the sequence rnr^n does not tend to +∞+\infty or to −∞-\infty. Its terms change sign, but ∣rn∣→+∞|r^n| \to +\infty. Exponential growth is faster than polynomial growth. The node exponentials dominate powers in sequences makes this precise.

Explanations

L1 human

Doubling again and again gives 1,2,4,8,16,…1, 2, 4, 8, 16, \dots, and these numbers grow without bound. Each factor r>1r > 1 does the same, but a factor close to 11 needs more steps.

What this node needs for W1
  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a node is. They do not measure its truth.

What this needs

To read this node, read these 5 nodes in this order. The foundations come first, and the list ends with this node.

Each node uses the nodes above it. The colour of the bar on a box shows the evidence level, and the box also gives it as text. The list below has the same nodes.

What depends on this

1 node uses this node, directly or through other nodes.
