Taylor series

Definition

Let II be an open interval, let a∈Ia \in I, and let f ⁣:I→Rf \colon I \to \mathbb{R} be smooth. The Taylor series of ff at aa is the power series ∑n=0∞f(n)(a)n!(x−a)n.\sum_{n=0}^{\infty} \frac{f^{(n)}(a)}{n!} (x - a)^n.

Remarks

Its partial sums are the Taylor polynomials of ff at aa. The Taylor series may diverge for each x≠ax \ne a. It may also converge to a function other than ff, as for the smooth non-analytic function. The Taylor series converges to ff near aa exactly when ff is analytic at aa. For a=0a = 0 it is the Maclaurin series.

Explanations

L1 human

The Taylor series is the Taylor polynomial of infinite degree. It uses all the derivatives of ff at one point.

What this node needs for W2
  • edge instance_of in: one example (0 of 1)
  • edge not_instance_of in: one non-example that fails one clause (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a node is. They do not measure its truth.

What this needs

To read this node, read these 16 nodes in this order. The foundations come first, and the list ends with this node.

Each node uses the nodes above it. The colour of the bar on a box shows the evidence level, and the box also gives it as text. The list below has the same nodes.
