Continuously differentiable function

Definition

Let II be an open interval and let f ⁣:I→Rf \colon I \to \mathbb{R}. The function ff is continuously differentiable, or of class C1C^1, if ff is differentiable on II and f′f' is continuous on II. More generally, for k≥1k \ge 1, ff is of class CkC^k if its higher derivative f(k)f^{(k)} exists and is continuous on II. The class C0C^0 consists of the continuous functions.

Remarks

Each Ck+1C^{k+1} function is CkC^k. A differentiable function need not be C1C^1. See x^2 sin(1/x). The function x∣x∣x |x| is C1C^1 but not twice differentiable at 00. Mathlib defines the class as ContDiff ℝ k f.

Explanations

L1 human

A C1C^1 function has a slope at each point, and the slope changes without jumps. The class CkC^k asks the same of the first kk derivatives.

What this node needs for W1
  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a node is. They do not measure its truth.

What this needs

To read this node, read these 9 nodes in this order. The foundations come first, and the list ends with this node.

Each node uses the nodes above it. The colour of the bar on a box shows the evidence level, and the box also gives it as text. The list below has the same nodes.
