Riemann integrable function

Definition

Let a<ba < b and let f ⁣:[a,b]→Rf \colon [a, b] \to \mathbb{R} be a function. The function ff is Riemann integrable on [a,b][a, b] if there is a real number II with the following property. For each ε>0\varepsilon > 0 there is δ>0\delta > 0 such that ∣S(f,P,t)−I∣<ε|S(f, P, t) - I| < \varepsilon for each tagged partition (P,t)(P, t) of [a,b][a, b] with mesh ∥P∥<δ\| P \| < \delta. Here S(f,P,t)S(f, P, t) is the Riemann sum of ff for (P,t)(P, t).

Remarks

The number II is unique. It is the Riemann integral of ff. A Riemann integrable function is bounded. Continuous functions and monotone functions on [a,b][a, b] are Riemann integrable. The Dirichlet function is not.

Explanations

L1 human

A function is Riemann integrable if its Riemann sums settle down to one number as the partitions get finer. It does not matter which tags we choose in the pieces.

What this node needs for W1
  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a node is. They do not measure its truth.

What this needs

To read this node, read these 4 nodes in this order. The foundations come first, and the list ends with this node.

Each node uses the nodes above it. The colour of the bar on a box shows the evidence level, and the box also gives it as text. The list below has the same nodes.
