Prime factorization

Definition

Let nn be a positive integer. A prime factorization of nn is a finite list of prime numbers p1≤p2≤⋯≤pkp_1 \le p_2 \le \dots \le p_k such that n=p1p2⋯pkn = p_1 p_2 \cdots p_k. For n=1n = 1, the prime factorization is the empty list, with the empty product 11.

Remarks

We often group equal primes and write n=q1e1q2e2⋯qrern = q_1^{e_1} q_2^{e_2} \cdots q_r^{e_r}, with distinct primes q1<⋯<qrq_1 < \dots < q_r and exponents ei≥1e_i \ge 1. For example, the prime factorization of 360360 is 2,2,2,3,3,52, 2, 2, 3, 3, 5, that is, 360=23⋅32⋅5360 = 2^3 \cdot 3^2 \cdot 5. Each positive integer has a prime factorization, and the fundamental theorem of arithmetic says that it is unique.

Explanations

L1 human

A prime factorization breaks a number into primes, which you cannot break further. A factor tree does this: 360=36⋅10=(6⋅6)⋅(2⋅5)=2⋅3⋅2⋅3⋅2⋅5360 = 36 \cdot 10 = (6 \cdot 6) \cdot (2 \cdot 5) = 2 \cdot 3 \cdot 2 \cdot 3 \cdot 2 \cdot 5. Sort the primes to get the list 2,2,2,3,3,52, 2, 2, 3, 3, 5.

What this node needs for W2
  • edge instance_of in: one example (0 of 1)
  • edge not_instance_of in: one non-example that fails one clause (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a node is. They do not measure its truth.

What this needs

To read this node, read these 3 nodes in this order. The foundations come first, and the list ends with this node.

Each node uses the nodes above it. The colour of the bar on a box shows the evidence level, and the box also gives it as text. The list below has the same nodes.

What depends on this

9 nodes use this node, directly or through other nodes.
