Euler product formula

Statement

Let ss be a complex number with real part Re⁡(s)>1\operatorname{Re}(s) > 1, and let ζ(s)=∑n=1∞n−s\zeta(s) = \sum_{n=1}^{\infty} n^{-s} be the Riemann zeta function. Then ζ(s)=∏p11−p−s,\zeta(s) = \prod_{p} \frac{1}{1 - p^{-s}}, where the product runs over all prime numbers pp and converges absolutely.

Remarks

The proof expands each factor as a geometric series 1+p−s+p−2s+⋯1 + p^{-s} + p^{-2s} + \cdots. The fundamental theorem of arithmetic shows that the product of these series contains each term n−sn^{-s} exactly one time. The same method gives a product formula ∑nf(n)n−s=∏p∑k≥0f(pk)p−ks\sum_n f(n) n^{-s} = \prod_p \sum_{k \ge 0} f(p^k) p^{-ks} for each multiplicative function ff when the series converges absolutely. Since ζ(s)→∞\zeta(s) \to \infty as s→1+s \to 1^+, the formula gives a proof of Euclid's theorem.

Explanations

Multiply (1+12+14+⋯ )(1+13+19+⋯ )(1+15+⋯ )⋯(1 + \tfrac12 + \tfrac14 + \cdots)(1 + \tfrac13 + \tfrac19 + \cdots)(1 + \tfrac15 + \cdots) \cdots and expand. Each fraction 1/n1/n appears one time, because nn is a product of prime powers in exactly one way. The formula with the exponent ss is the same idea with 1/ns1 / n^s.

What this node needs for W1
  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a node is. They do not measure its truth.

What this needs

To read this node, read these 8 nodes in this order. The foundations come first, and the list ends with this node.

Each node uses the nodes above it. The colour of the bar on a box shows the evidence level, and the box also gives it as text. The list below has the same nodes.
