Partition of a set

Definition

Let AA be a set. A partition of AA is a set PP of subsets of AA, called blocks, with these three properties:

  1. each block is nonempty;
  2. the blocks are pairwise disjoint;
  3. the union of the blocks is AA.

Equivalently, each element of AA is in exactly one block.

Remarks

The set {{1,3},{2}}\{\{1, 3\}, \{2\}\} is a partition of {1,2,3}\{1, 2, 3\}. The even and the odd integers form a partition of Z\mathbb{Z} with two blocks. The equivalence classes form a partition, and each partition comes from exactly one equivalence relation. See the correspondence between equivalence relations and partitions.

Explanations

L1 human

A partition is a way to sort all elements into boxes. No box is empty, and each element goes into exactly one box.

What this node needs for W2
  • edge instance_of in: one example (0 of 1)
  • edge not_instance_of in: one non-example that fails one clause (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a node is. They do not measure its truth.

What depends on this

15 nodes use this node, directly or through other nodes.
